Lieutenant, The Basic School 5-85 Echo Company, 5th Plt
Here is recollection that that I believe exemplifies the warrior spirit that a new Marine officer is filled with while going through the finest combat leadership training in the world.
During our unstructured physical training, we invented a game called scrotum soccer. Generally, it followed the rules of soccer, with the addition that each player wielded his mesh laundry bag partially full of laundry as a weapon on the playing field. There were no limits on when or how you could take someone out with your laundry bag.
After a few games over a period of a week or so, we decided the game needed to be more challenging. We moved it to the confidence course (sand, log obstacles, concertina wire, etc.) and placed the two goals on the high ground on either side of the course. It was raucous. Afterwards, when 20 plus lieutenants showed up at the infirmary that day, an inquiry was made as to the source of the injuries. The game was consequently banned.

Off duty: I helped organize the very first Helsinki Roosters, an American football team in Helsinki, Finland. Several members of the American Embassy were involved in the organization and development of the team. Myself, and a Marine named C.J. Westmoreland, also played in the inaugural game. The rest of the team members were Finnish. The game was against the only other team that had formed at the time, a team that was organized and coached by the Mormons. I don't recall their name.
In the early practice sessions, when we were forming the Roosters, I told a joke to the team about "Brewster the Rooster". It was such a big hit, that the team was named the Roosters based on the joke. (No Joke.)
Look at he Roosters now. http://www.roosters.fi/English/english.htm
