My work for them included: • Initial assignment to build a financial model of the business and then to help turnaround the company from projected losses. • Mapped and helped implement strategy using Kaplan and Norton methodology to achieve profitable growth. • Designed and implemented a simple profit share scheme to replace a complex and dysfunctional STI system. • Designed and implemented a balanced scorecard based monthly reports suite that was distributed to all staff. This helped to ensure all staff remained focused on the financial health of the organisation and how it impacted on the amount distributed to them as profit share. • Established in house accounting function - recruited a Financial Controller and accounting staff and oversaw its performance to provide best practice accounting support and reduce external service provider costs. • Re-engineered all internal financial processes, including installation of new ‘best of breed’ practice management system (ERP) to enhance operational efficiency. • Drove a highly successful divestment process of Network Economics Consulting Group businesses raising sale proceeds of six times earnings, considerably over NPV valuation, while still achieving record earnings levels and strong operating cash flow. • Brokered and negotiated complex deal requiring reconciliation of contrary Australia/US regulatory issues. Engineered dynamics of the transaction to overcome a near fatal deadlock in sale process. • Headed the deal team to buy back the company from the US parent at a substantially reduced price. • Sat on the Board as an Independent Director

I was responsible for treasury, reporting and assisting the Board with strategy. I cleaned up the accounts department and systems, as well as improving reporting to the Board, ASX, media and shareholders. Nice people, great Board, and a really interesting assignment amidst the craziness of the tech-boom.

I was employed at start-up, reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, and responsible for financial and management reporting, accounting, treasury, administration and information technology. In 1995, in the early days of the internet, I personally sketched the architecture, and sold to a conservative Board, a Lotus Notes-based core process workflow management system. The system automated the compilation and distribution of bulky agendas, working papers and minutes for over fifty committees and working groups and distributed them over numerous proprietary systems. It saved the organisation having to employ at least five additional administration staff and substantially reduced distribution costs. It's still in use today. APCA is viewed by many as a model banking industry association. It has always had excellent Board Members and superb management and I feel privileged to have worked there.
