Rob Slee, Author, Private Capital Markets Featured Speaker at the

AM&AA Summer Conference July 20-22, 2010

Robert T. Slee, author of Private Capital Markets, the first book of its kind dedicated to explaining the behavior of players in private markets will provide an illuminating update on Private Capital Markets at the AMAA Summer Conference in Chicago on July 20 from 1-4 PM.

Slee’s presentation will describe the results of the Pepperdine Private Capital Markets project that he architected in early 2009.   Slee and others spent the past 18 months creating and then implementing the three largest surveys ever of the U.S. private capital markets.  Slee partnered with Pepperdine University in 2009/2010 to survey banks, asset-based lenders, mezzanine, private equity, venture capital, hedge funds, business owners and other capital providers.

According to Slee, “The surveys provide first-ever empirical evidence of the investing behavior of institutional private capital providers.  Specifically, we finally understand cost of capital for private companies, which is important because companies do not create value until they achieve returns on capital greater than their cost of capital.  Slee claims that 80% of private companies are not creating value, which greatly threatens the U.S. economy going forward”.

Slee’s presentation will include a review of the key findings of the Pepperdine Private Capital Markets Surveys, plus focus on the new discount rate model he created called the Private Cost of Capital (PCOC) Model.  Slee expects the PCOC model to become the prevalent way by which risk will be quantified in the private markets.

This educational session provides 3 hours of CPE credit.

History

In 2004, Rob Slee wrote, Private Capital Markets: Valuation, Capitalization, and Transfer of Private Business Interests (Wiley).  This book launched the new field of study called Private Finance, which is now taught around the world.  Slee established a theoretical framework by which to examine the opaque private capital markets.  In this book, Slee made the point that private capital markets contain millions of companies and generate the majority of the U.S. employment and GDP.  He further asserts that private capital markets are unique and not adequately described by corporate financial theory, which is what has been taught in business schools for more than 30 years.
